If one of your partitions is running low on free space and there are no more junk files to erase, you should check which files or folders use the most space and send them to a different location. Instead of bringing up countless properties windows, to verify individual folders, you can use Folder Size to make this task much easier and faster. The software looks and feels like Windows Explorer, but it allows you to know which items are larger or smaller, regardless of the accessed folder. The best part is that it places this information right in front of you at all times and it makes it easy to understand.

Folder Size is freeware, but some of its features will be made available only if you buy the Personal or Professional edition. The program works on numerous Windows platforms, from Win 98 to Win 8. You can install it in a minute and you don't need powerful hardware to run it.

Just like a standard explorer window, the software displays your folders in a tree structure, on the left side of its interface, and you can view their contents on the right side. Before you can browse through your data, you have to select a partition from a drop menu and click a button to scan it. Folder Size allows you to explore your folders during the scanning process, so you don't have to wait until it is finished. Alternatively, you may target and scan a specific folder, on any partition.

All files and folders are listed along with their sizes, as well as percentages, which tell you which items use the most disk space, in the selected folder. Besides a standard list view of a folder's contents, the software displays a graphical representation of the same contents and size information, beneath the files list. You can switch between a bar chart and a pie chart, which display the largest contents in the selected folder. Clicking one of the chart's bars or pie slices will select the corresponding file on the same interface.

You may right click files and folders to reveal a series of options, for deleting the items, removing them from the list, showing their properties windows and more. It is also possible to set up various filters, on a different window. You can set the program to include or exclude files with certain extensions, which are smaller, greater or equal to a size of your choice, files with specific attributes or time stamps.

Pros

The software can help you spot the largest items in any folder. It provides a graphical representation of the same information, which gives you a clear picture regarding the size of your files and folders. You can display sizes in different measuring units, filter files and more.

Cons

Certain features are not available in the free version. If you want to know which files or folders use all your disk space, Folder Size will help you acquire this information in a simple and comfortable manner.
